During the 1970s-80s Jamaica lost many musicians and teachers to migration. Brass music has suffered the most.
For four days in July, high school music teachers from St James and Hanover worked with Dr Jason Sulliman (website) a brass music specialist from Troy University in Alabama. These committed music teachers were determined to learn how to teach brass music performance to their students as part of a long term effort to increase the number of brass musicians and teachers in Jamaica.

"I have been equipped with techniques that cater to beginners and how to adjust to their needs or help them improve." - Music Teacher
Feedback from the participants indicates the workshops were effective in delivering practical strategies. Others emphasized the helpful structure of the lesson and expressed excitement to begin teaching. “I got a step by step way how to focus on [technique] and the sound in general,” said a music teacher who completed the workshop. “Very interesting.”

Many thanks to Dr Jason Sulliman and Alpha School of Music for delivering much needed community music training. And to the teachers, your enthusiasm for brass instrument education is inspiring. The future is sounding bright!
