The Dive Shop in Oracabessa on the north coast of Jamaica is a hub of ocean activities as diverse as their motto -- “Protect. Restore. Explore.”
For Jaye James, a volunteer dive assistant, the underwater experience for newcomers, and Discover Scuba for first timers in particular, is a powerful hook.
“I act as a bridge between our people and the ocean. The majority of the persons that show up for the Discover Scuba diving lessons can’t swim and are afraid to get in the water. I support and encourage them and make them trust the process.”
Opened in October 2019, The Dive Shop was established to provide a funding stream to the Oracabessa Bay Fish Sanctuary, a designated replenishment zone for fisheries resources. Inside the sanctuary, fish and other species are protected to help maximize the productive capacity of the ecosystem.
All Dive Shop proceeds sponsor the sanctuary and its mission which is focused on coral restoration and supporting local fishers through alternative livelihoods. The Dive Shop is also an authorized Scubapro dealer.
